Refugee Week

Refugee Week, 15-21 June is an opportunity to celebrate the creativity and resilience of refugees and the contribution that they make to the economy and culture of the countries and societies that they settle in. The theme for this year’s refugee week is COURAGE.

You can find out more about refugee week here: https://refugeeweek.org/

In partnership with Everybody’s Seaford, we will be holding a stall on Seaford Beach, near the Martello Tower on Sunday 21st June from 11am to 1pm. We will be showcasing the success of popular well-known people who were refugees.

There will be singing and storytelling as well as leafleting and engagement with passers-by. We want to challenge the current widespread virulent misinformation about refugees and celebrate their creativity, resilience and contributions. Come and join us to show your support and spread the positive message.

We will also be holding stalls at food co-operatives run by the Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) in Peacehaven and Newhaven during Refugee Week.

Lewes Refugee Support Group are holding a public meeting on Thursday 18th June from 7-8.30 at the Town Hall with speaker Dr Sohail Jannesari.

This event is a short talk and arts workshop based on Sohail’s recently published book, The Migrant Art of Coping. The workshop draws on the book’s core argument, that people seeking sanctuary hold knowledge about survival, care and mental wellbeing under hostile conditions that are useful for everyone in society.
