In Memory of Professor Jason Arday

Lewes District Anti‑Racist Alliance joins many across the country in expressing our deep sadness at the death of Professor Jason Arday. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew and loved him. His loss will be felt profoundly, especially among Black academics and Black communities across the sector.

Professor Arday was an extraordinary scholar, a courageous advocate for racial justice, and a person of immense warmth and humanity. His work challenged structural racism, expanded opportunity, and opened doors for others. At a time when Black academics remain significantly underrepresented, his achievements, and the pathways he created, mattered enormously.

In recent days, organisations and individuals across the UK have come together to honour his life. A vigil was held in Trafalgar Square, where colleagues, students, and community members gathered to remember Jason and stand in solidarity with those closest to him. The outpouring of grief and gratitude reflects the impact he had on so many.

As an alliance committed to anti‑racist action, we recognise the importance of creating space for people to grieve, reflect, and determine how best to honour Jason’s legacy. His contribution to higher education and to the fight against racism will not be diminished by commentary or speculation. What endures is the example he set: principled, compassionate, and unafraid to confront injustice.

We will continue to hold Jason’s family and community in our thoughts, and we stand with all those working to ensure that his life’s work: expanding equity, challenging discrimination, and building a fairer future — continues.
