REFUGEE WEEK 2026
On Sunday 21st June Everybody’s Seaford and the Anti-Racism Alliance held a stall on Seaford Beach at the Martello Tower.
The idea was to offer a visible message in support of refugees, to celebrate their creativity, resilience and contributions and showcase the success of popular well-known people who were refugees.
We wanted to challenge the current widespread virulent misinformation about refugees. We engaged with passers-by to invite them to take the Refugee Quiz, a leaflet prepared by Lewes Refugee Support Group.
And there were activities for children: reading from books about Paddington Bear or stories by Judith Kerr and drawings in response to the question ‘what does courage look like?’
We also had singing from the Hope and Anger Singers led by Wendy Pickles. People who came to support us joined in the singing, creating a joyful and positive atmosphere.
We had a variety of responses. Supporters stopped to chat and join in the singing. Some people who stopped to do the quiz were surprised by the answers while others got all the questions right. There were those who walked past with a 'no thankyou' but there was no open hostility.
Alex from the Anti-Racism Alliance commented that the visibility had a positive impact while Alice from Everybody’s Seaford said it hit exactly the right note - welcoming and publicly affirming that most people do in fact care!
